Komodo National Park

Komodo National Park has been acknowledged as one of UNESCO's world heritage sites and voted as one of the "7 Wonders of Nature". It claims to fame is its inhabitants: the Komodo dragons. This is is where rare komodo dragons are believed to be the last species of dinosaurs inhabiting the earth. Many other wild animals such as wild buffalo, deer, wild Boar, long tailed macaque and various other birds currently also live in the park.

The Komodo Dragon (Varanus komodoensis) is an endangered species which can only be found in the Komodo National Park (KNP) in East Nusa Tenggara (NTT). Coming face-to-face with these great, ferocious creatures is an experience that will last a lifetime. The lizard-like creatures are about two or three meters in length. They can easily weigh about 165 kilograms. Despite of their sheer size and appearance, they are not active hunters. What makes them intimidating is the fact that they are a patient predator. In the wild, they stalk a victim, usually a weak or injured one. One bite and that's what it usually takes. After following the victim for a while, sometimes up to several days' time, the komodos will devour the dying prey.

The park consists of three major small islands; Komodo, Rinca and Padar. Komodo and Rinca islands, are the only two islands where you can find the dragons. Komodo island is the further island which has fewer but much larger inhabitants. The island is accessable by private boat from to Labuan Bajo pier. This is a pleasant and easy ride and you might be able to see some wild dolphins on the way to the island.

A park ranger will meet you at the island. After a short safety briefing, your guide and the park ranger will take you around the island to see the dragons roaming freely in their wild natural habitat. The tour might take about 1 to 2 hours.

Komodo National Park is also known for its marine life. Various coral reefs, sea grass beds, mangroves and semi-hidden bays add to the nature of the surroundings, so that many species of marine life flourish. Pink beach and Bidadari island are perfect spot for diving and snorkeling.
