Sri Lanka is located about 30 km (19 mi) south east of the southern coast of India. It consists of the main island and a number of small islands, and shares maritime borders with the Maldvies and India. Sri Lanka was formerly under British Empire rule and called Ceylon. In 1972, it became a republic and was named the Republic of Sri Lanka.
Sri Lanka is a diverse and multicultural country with a rich Buddhist heritage. The pre-history of Sri Lanka goes back 125,000 years and possibly even as far back as 500,000. To this day, you can find many preserved ancient cities such as Kandy - the last capital of the Sinhalese Kingdom, Anuradhapura - capital city of Anuradhapura Kingdom for nearly 1,400 years, and UNESCO world heritage sites Galle and Sirigiya.
Sri Lanka is one of 25 biodiverity hotspots in the world and has the highest biodiversity density in Asia. The country has declared 24 wildlife reserves and home to native species such as leopards, Asian elephants, sloth bears and endangered wild boar to name a few.
